Details

For 1.e4 players, the most principled choice after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 has always been the Ruy Lopez with 3.Bb5.

As the World Championship unfolded between World Champion Magnus Carlsen and Russian challenger Sergey Karjakin, we couldn’t help but notice that the Ruy Lopez opening, (also known as the Spanish) continues to be the preferred method of attack and defense at the elite level.

One of the oldest and most trusted openings, it originated in Spain by Ruy Lopez de Segura in 1561, and since then has always had a prominent role in the world of top level chess.

For beginners, playing the Italian game aggressively might be the way to go until a certain level of tactical mastery is achieved.

At some point in a chess player's career, he needs to try and master positional play a bit better and for that purpose the Ruy Lopezfits the bill.  It is commonly believed that once master level is reached, the Ruy offers the best chances for white to gain an opening advantage in the double king pawn openings (1.e4 e5).
