A rigorous, dedicated teacher

Dan is extremely knowledgeable, but what is more important is that he makes a real effort to understand your specific weaknesses and misconceptions. He doesn't have a "one size fits all" approach. (Posted on April 5, 2020)
Simply the best coach
Review by SmartIcecream
My daughter has taken the class for over 19 months. Dan totally brings her chess to the next level with his solid approach. Each class starts with deep game analysis, move by move based. All the missed chances from both sides in the opening., Middle game and endgame are explained not only with variations but also in the crystally clear human understandable ideas, which can be easily digested by student and replicated in the future games. From his many years of teaching experiences, Dan has prepare a systematic course, covering major attacking themes, middle game and endgame strategy endgame . Many questions are asked during class, and most of them are simply 20% above the students capabilities, requiring deep thinking and calculation. This significantly improves the student overall chess skills, reflected in their own OTB games. Moreover , his English is at native speaker level. Strongly recommended. (Posted on March 15, 2020)

I first took lessons seriously with Dan in 2005. Already at that point he was the highest reviewed chess coaches on the ICC.
Dan stands out from other coaches for a number of reasons:
1. Dan has a very well prepared teaching agenda, fine-tuned over thousands of hours of lessons with over 100 students.
2. Unlike many other coaches, teaching is clearly more than simply an income supplement for Dan. He approaches improving his students with the same drive as he approaches the game itself. He takes the time between lessons to look over students' games and follow their activities on the ICC with a genuinely drive to see them succeed.
The lessons are difficult, but catered carefully to the ability of the student. He has a particular talent for giving students the right amount of time and the right clues if necessary to push them to solve tactics and find correct plans. This is a fine balance. Some teachers give away answer immediately without the student really pushing themselves. Others let them suffer in silence for the duration of the lesson. Dan has perfected the middle ground.
I owe a lot of my passion for the game to early lessons with this coach, and could not recommend him more highly. (Posted on February 23, 2018)

I have been taking lessons with Dan for about 7 months. During that time, I've gone from struggling in the 1000-1100 range to having multiple 1800+ performance ratings. He helped me to correctly identify my key weaknesses and provided recommendations and information on how to efficiently address them, including fixing my flawed thinking process as well as my method for practicing tactics. He does not sugar-coat feedback, but is patient when working to solve problems. If you are serious about wanting to improve and are willing to put in the work, you will be hard pressed to find a better coach to help you. (Posted on August 9, 2017)

Teaches more than books ever could.

As an intermediate player (mid 1800 rating on ICC) I have learned an immense amount from Mr Vasiesiu in spite of only having taken a few lessons thus far. His emphasis on fixing one's thought process is proving far more beneficial than mindlessly chipping away at theory for hours. Highly recommended. (Posted on March 13, 2017)

Dan is an excellent teacher from what I have already gathered in the 6 lessons I have had. He is diligent, thorough and offers great insight into the game. I have seen a great improvement in my chess already and would highly recommend him to anybody thinking about improving their game. (Posted on January 23, 2017)

Dan is an excellent coach who is tactically sharp for his skill level, and he has plenty of experience and knowledge of openings and middlegame plans. This means that he can provide very solid game review in real time in human language while playing through your games with you, without seeming at all like the process would benefit from computer analysis. He also has very well planned endgame lessons for building a strong base of ability in playing with the pieces from the basics. Dan has an uncanny ability to be patient with your calculation and give you just the level of hint or idea that you need to get the solution, in some cases challenging your perhaps correct solution with a reply that you didn't consider in your variation analysis but is critical to its correctness. This method of studying endgames that are just beyond your capability of what you could study on your own in difficulty level but with a sufficient level of stimulative guidance has been proven to be a very valuable deep practice in learning in general and in improving calculation and endgame skill specifically.
