European IM and experienced trainer, one of the most active on ICC. Taking students rated anywhere from 1200 to 2200. I believe that the key to improvement in chess is to focus on learning how to think properly. Most people get stuck because they only accumulate knowledge without actually developing a proper thought process. My lessons are one on one, customized to meet the student's needs. Opening study, planning, calculation, typical endgames, answering questions, going through games - I do it all. $30/hour or even better $50/2 consecutive hrs.

Attention – potential students, contact me (lazypawn@gmail.com) before making any payment! Information I need – your age, rating, chess books/software you own, desired lesson times, chess goals.

Clear, no-nonsense instruction Review by micky1943

Dan is a hard working and challenging coach. His chess knowledge is impressive, and he works very hard to get it across. If you're in the mood to really work on your chess, you couldn't do better (Posted on September 3, 2018)

One of the Best Review by Lamarque

I first took lessons seriously with Dan in 2005. Already at that point he was the highest reviewed chess coaches on the ICC.

Dan stands out from other coaches for a number of reasons:

1. Dan has a very well prepared teaching agenda, fine-tuned over thousands of hours of lessons with over 100 students.
2. Unlike many other coaches, teaching is clearly more than simply an income supplement for Dan. He approaches improving his students with the same drive as he approaches the game itself. He takes the time between lessons to look over students' games and follow their activities on the ICC with a genuinely drive to see them succeed.

The lessons are difficult, but catered carefully to the ability of the student. He has a particular talent for giving students the right amount of time and the right clues if necessary to push them to solve tactics and find correct plans. This is a fine balance. Some teachers give away answer immediately without the student really pushing themselves. Others let them suffer in silence for the duration of the lesson. Dan has perfected the middle ground.

I owe a lot of my passion for the game to early lessons with this coach, and could not recommend him more highly. (Posted on February 23, 2018)

Terrific Coach Review by zachowland
Rating
I have been taking lessons with Dan for about 7 months. During that time, I've gone from struggling in the 1000-1100 range to having multiple 1800+ performance ratings. He helped me to correctly identify my key weaknesses and provided recommendations and information on how to efficiently address them, including fixing my flawed thinking process as well as my method for practicing tactics. He does not sugar-coat feedback, but is patient when working to solve problems. If you are serious about wanting to improve and are willing to put in the work, you will be hard pressed to find a better coach to help you. (Posted on August 9, 2017)

Teaches more than books ever could. Review by nathanpillay

As an intermediate player (mid 1800 rating on ICC) I have learned an immense amount from Mr Vasiesiu in spite of only having taken a few lessons thus far. His emphasis on fixing one's thought process is proving far more beneficial than mindlessly chipping away at theory for hours. Highly recommended. (Posted on March 13, 2017)

Excellent Coach Review by sirprimal11

Dan is an excellent coach who is tactically sharp for his skill level, and he has plenty of experience and knowledge of openings and middlegame plans. This means that he can provide very solid game review in real time in human language while playing through your games with you, without seeming at all like the process would benefit from computer analysis. He also has very well planned endgame lessons for building a strong base of ability in playing with the pieces from the basics. Dan has an uncanny ability to be patient with your calculation and give you just the level of hint or idea that you need to get the solution, in some cases challenging your perhaps correct solution with a reply that you didn't consider in your variation analysis but is critical to its correctness. This method of studying endgames that are just beyond your capability of what you could study on your own in difficulty level but with a sufficient level of stimulative guidance has been proven to be a very valuable deep practice in learning in general and in improving calculation and endgame skill specifically. Best Teacher, Period Review by mgmead

I started playing chess seriously in my 40s, which means I'm faced with a great deal of challenge for getting the game significantly under my belt.

I've tried a number of chess teachers, and their general approach devolves to "bring me your games, I'll tell you what you did wrong." That's a pretty lousy structure for teaching - it's like telling someone to go and try to do math, then teaching them based on their errors.

Dr. Dan Vasiesiu has an actual curriculum and system for thinking about what's happening on the board. He's talked to and studied the basic processes of thinking that other Masters use and has built a structured and pro-active system of teaching that can actually be LEARNED. He has affected my appreciation of the game tremendously and is a superior instructor. (Posted on August 5, 2016)
