Introducing the all new Komodo, Komodo MCTS

Komodo 12.2 MCTS thinks like no other chess engine in the world. Inspired by the ideas of AlphaZero and Leela, Larry and Mark set out to reinvent Komodo. What they came up with was Komodo 12.2 MCTS - an engine which searches for candidate moves in an incredible new way, and finds moves no other engine can!?

Komodo mastermind GM Larry Kaufman introduces Komodo 12.2

November 5, 2018

We have just released Komodo 12.2. The normal version is about 10 elo stronger than Komodo 12.1.1 on four threads, while the MCTS version is an incredible 200 elo stronger (in round numbers) than 12.1.1 MCTS in blitz play (perhaps 150 in slow games) regardless of the number of threads. While the MCTS version is not yet as strong as normal Komodo (unless you are using MultiPV = 3 or more), it would probably be in the top 5 engines on most hardware if it replaced normal Komodo. Komodo 12.2 is much better than all previous versions in its ability to utilize hardware with many cores, both in normal and in MCTS modes.

Compatable GUIs

- BlitzIn, Dasher, ICC for Windows, ICC for Mac
- Chessbase

- Fritz
- Aquarium

Operating system : Windows, Linux, Mac OSX 10.5.8 or higher, ( Android version available only from Google) .

(note: Komodo does not include a 'chessboard'. See Installation instructions)

Komodo is three-time TCEC champion, the most prestigious online computer chess event, and has also won several CCT events and several World Championships. Komodo has won a four game match giving various substantial handicaps to World Champion Candidate and then-U.S. Champion Hikaru Nakamura in two-hour games.

Komodo supports Syzygy tablebases and is available for Windows, Linux, Mac and Android.

  •   'Use MCTS' (new) This "Monte Carlo Tree Search" option plays very different chess than any standard engine, still at a higher level than any human can play. It is especially useful when used together with "MultiPV".
  •  Evaluation developed by a Grandmaster
  •  Multi-core support (up to 64 cores)
  •  Syzygy endgame tablebase support
  •  Fischer Random Chess support
  •  'Variety' lets you control how likely Komodo is to make a different move at the same depth in the same position.
  •  'Persistent Hash' lets you save Komodo's analysis of a position so you can come back later and resume analysis, saving you time
  •  'Dynamism' lets you control how willing Komodo will be to make long-term sacrifices of material or pawn structure for dynamic play.
  •  'Progress Threshold' (new) lets you control how quickly Komodo starts to worry about the fifty-move rule.
  •  'Skill' (new) this setting allows you to weaken Komodo in 150 elo increments from ELO 200 up to 2900 (from beginner to World Champion).

Great New Engine Review by nimzomania
Engine is fast and provides deeper analysis than previous versions. Tried MCTM settings and the analysis doesn't appear to be quite as strong as the normal settings, though it holds great promise for the future of the Monte Carlo method. A good buy (Posted on December 14, 2018)

Excellent chess engine Review by zdravs
Using Arena 3.5.1 on my computer matched against Houdini 6 for ten rounds Komodo 12.2.2 had 9 wins and 1 draw. Matched against Stockfish 9 it did not fare as well but is still an excellent chess engine for analysis ! (Posted on November 19, 2018)
