  23. Ace Up Your Sleeve - 1. d4 repertoire - by IM Michael Rahal
    $99.00
In recent years, openings theory has evolved so much that it’s become increasingly difficult to decide between the tangle of lines, analysis and variations. It's a struggle even for Grandmasters to keep up with it all, not to mention club players! It’s no coincidence that the World Champion Magnus Carlsen often plays secondary lines to achieve a less-known middle game position and sidestep his opponent’s preparation. His incredible quality often allows him to accumulate small advantages in the late middlegame and endgame which he then converts to victory. But how many Carlsen’s are there in the world?

In the previous few lectures, John showed us how to react to White's first move 1.e4 and 1.d4. In this new series our IM shows us how to play against 1.c4. The first opening Watson teaches us is the fianchetto system 1.c4 b6 2. d4 Bb7, which usually transposes to the classic English Defense (1.c4 b6 2. d4 e6), but avoids certain difficult-to-meet lines. By delaying or skipping ...Nf6, Black keeps his strategy flexible, and in most cases the move ...f5 is key to controlling the central light squares and creating counterplay. The result is a dynamic and challenging system which can easily lead to Black seizing the initiative. Don't miss your chance to add another great piece of opening theory to your repertoire! 30. The Sicilian Nimzovitch (8 part series)
    $23.92
Ronen's Opening Survey: The Sicilian Nimzovitch. B29: Sicilian: Nimzovich-Rubinstein; Rubinstein counter-gambit. The Sicilian Nimzovich - 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nf6 - is a rare and surprising line in the endless ocean of Sicilian lines. It is not played by the very top players almost at all, yet we can see some strong GMs playing that: Hikaru Nakamura and German top player Arkadij Naiditsch for example, and several other strong GMs. Black main plan is to attack white central pawn immediately, in something that resembles the Alekhine defense. The Sicilian Nimzovich is a surprising and dangerous weapon for almost any level. GM Ronen Har-Zvi, with his usual precise and detailed analysis, and with numerous examples of games, guides us through the pros and cons of this unusual variant of the ever-green Sicilian defense. 31. Anti-Dutch 2 Bg5 (5 part series)
    $14.95
Ronen's Opening Survey: Anti-Dutch 2 Bg5 (5 part series). A80: Dutch, 2.Bg5 variation. Players wishing to play the Dutch Defense must certainly pay as much attention to Anti-Dutch systems as they do to the main line, as it is these very lines that can more frequently arise at club level. And one of the most popular is the tricky 1 d4 f5 2 Bg5, a line that’s certainly a blood brother of the Trompowsky Attack. Black has to be extremely careful when facing 2 Bg5, because many up against this line have fallen victim to a miniature with White winning with a crushing attack in under 25 moves. This line is also a favorite in online play, and especially here on ICC! And in a new series of Ronen’s Opening Survey, GM Ronen Har-Zvi explores the cut and thrust of the blood-thirsty Anti-Dutch with 2 Bg5. Learn More
  32. Sicilian OKelly (5 part series)
    $14.95
Ronen's Opening Survey: Sicilian O'Kelly #1. B28: Sicilian o'Kelly. The O'Kelly variation in the Sicilian is one of the most rare side interesting alternatives. The idea is to surprise white after 3.d4 with cxd4 4.Nxd4 and then Nf6, followed by e5 and Bb4, after white natural move 5.Nc3. White's main alternatives to 2...a6 should be 3.c4 or c3, transposing into positions where a6 might not assist black that much. All considered, 2. ...a6 is a dangerous weapon for and against any club up to master level players. In this new series Ronen, with his usual precision and detailed examples, explains us all the subtleties of this rare but useful variation of the widely used Sicilian Defense. Learn More

The four squares d4-d4-e4-e5 are the center of the board, and controlling those squares is the aim of virtually every openings. Concept as "classical" or "Big" center are the subject of this interesting series by IM John Watson. He will show you how to control, directly or indirectly, the 'core' of the board, from which usually start any strategic and tactical ideas in the game. Starting from the very basics, John goes through this important subject to take you up to the more complicated situations, all aimed to control those findamental four squares. Learn More

  47. French Classical Variation
    $2.99

    French Classical Variation:

The Classical line is the most principled and I believe the strongest response to the French defense. Currently many elite player opt for the classical line, when encountered with the French defense in the opening. White usually has more space advantage but black tries to put as much pressure as possible on the d4 pawn and try to exchange the bad light-squared bishop when there is an opportunity. If he manages to do that black is ok; if not usually black has to defend passively in a slightly cramped position.

  48. French Exchange Variation
    $2.99

    French Exchange Variation:

Exchange variation of the French defense usually doesn't pose many problems for black , however black needs to play accurately to equalize in the opening. In symmetrical lines black is absolutely safe. The only line that offers white some active play is the one with 4.c4, with chances to get an opening advantage. Overall I would say that the Exchange line is relatively safe for Black.

  49. Marshall Gambit (2 video series)
    $5.98
One of the world’s first Grandmasters, America’s Frank J. Marshall (1877-1944) left behind a lasting legacy to the chess world with his revered gambit against the Ruy Lopez:  the Marshall Attack with 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 a6 4 Ba4 Nf6 5 0-0 Be7 6 Re1 b5 7 Bb3 0-0 8 c3 d5! The myth goes that Marshall deliberately kept his analysis secret for seven years before playing it against Capablanca at New York 1918, but this has since been debunked by historians.   Regardless of its origins, it continues to wreck havoc both at club and elite level over 90 years on - and the latest high-profile victim is Ukrainian world No7 Vassily Ivanchuk, who got hit by some stunning new theory in it by Hungary’s Peter Leko at the recently concluded World Team Championship in Ningbo, China. ChessFM’s openings expert, GM Ronen Har-Zvi has comprehensively covered the Marshall Attack during his weekly openings show last year - but in a Gambit Guide special, GM Boris Alterman puts under the microscope Leko’s new novelty in the Marshall Attack that obviously wasn't covered during that particular series.  Learn More
