In the previous few lectures, John showed us how to react to White's first move 1.e4 and 1.d4. In this new series our IM shows us how to play against 1.c4. The first opening Watson teaches us is the fianchetto system 1.c4 b6 2. d4 Bb7, which usually transposes to the classic English Defense (1.c4 b6 2. d4 e6), but avoids certain difficult-to-meet lines. By delaying or skipping ...Nf6, Black keeps his strategy flexible, and in most cases the move ...f5 is key to controlling the central light squares and creating counterplay. The result is a dynamic and challenging system which can easily lead to Black seizing the initiative. Don't miss your chance to add another great piece of opening theory to your repertoire! 18. Chess Openings Wizard & Bookup Professional: Prepare openings, endgames and tactics
Chess Openings Wizard is a downloadable program based on Bookup, the program used for more than 35 years to teach and prepare openings, endgames and tactics. COW has the usual functions one expects in chess software (sharp graphics, chess engines for nearly instant gradmaster level opinions, the ability to sort and search millions of PGN games). However, COW is distinct from game database software. In COW, all of these functions revolve around trees of positions that form opening theory. Rather than point out what games the moves belong to, COW is more useful when you want to know the best move(s) in the position, what is the optimum value of the position with best play, what authors say about the position for both sides, what super grandmasters play against other super grandmasters in each position. 20. Ace Up Your Sleeve - 1. d4 repertoire - by IM Michael Rahal

    Regular Price: $99.00

    Special Price $49.95

In recent years, openings theory has evolved so much that it’s become increasingly difficult to decide between the tangle of lines, analysis and variations. It's a struggle even for Grandmasters to keep up with it all, not to mention club players! It’s no coincidence that the World Champion Magnus Carlsen often plays secondary lines to achieve a less-known middle game position and sidestep his opponent’s preparation. His incredible quality often allows him to accumulate small advantages in the late middlegame and endgame which he then converts to victory. But how many Carlsen’s are there in the world?

  22. London System (4 part series)
London System (4 part series) Players: Blatny, Luchan, Acosta, Velasquez, McKenna, MacRae, Spassky, Bukic, Ivanchuk, Svidler, Speelman, Haik, Kovacevic, Byrne, Petrosian, Chistiakov, Vaganian, Kupreichik ECO: D02 , A80 IM Watson starts with 1.d4 to help you build your opening repertoire. Basically the London is a set of solid lines where after 1.d4 White quickly develops his dark-squared bishop to f4 and normally bolsters his center with  pawns on c3 and e3 rather than expanding. Although it has the potential for a quick kingside attack, the white forces are generally flexible enough to engage in a battle anywhere on the board. Historically it developed into a system mainly from three variations: 1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Bf4; 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 e6 3.Bf4; 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 g6 3.Bf4. Learn More
  23. Panov Attack Caro-Kann defense (3 video series)
GM Boris Alterman looks at the Panov-Botvinnik Attack against the Caro-Kann Defense - a line that can also be transposed to from many openings, including the Queen's Gambit and the Nimzo-Indian Defense The Panov-Botvinnik Attack has a unique important place in chess lore. After Capablanca adopted the Caro-Kann, it assumed a status as the solid way for Black to escape attacking efforts of e4 players. But Vasily Panov, a Soviet master, theoretician and Chess correspondent for Izvestia, took a different view of the situation and decided to test Blacks mettle with the direct action of 1 e4 c6 2 d4 d5 3 exd5 cxd5 4 c4. Mikhail Botvinnik picked up on this and quickly formed it into a potent weapon that has since become the choice of determined king pawn players. Learn More
  24. London System (4 part series)
Ronen's Opening Survey: London System (4 part series). A47: "King's Indian/London System with c4, King's Indian/London System (different games played)". In the King’s Indian Defense, White has to memorize a labyrinth of variations if he hopes to have any real chance at walking away with an advantage. But the London System (1. d4 2. Nf3 3. Bf4) is an excellent way for amateurs to meet the King’s Indian Defense - and for a bit more bite, White can adopt a big Boris Spassky favorite by playing the London System with c4 against the KID. Not only was it a weapon of Spassky's, it was also used by the likes of Kasparov, Bronstein and Smyslov. And in a new four-part series, GM Ronen Har-Zvi takes a closer look at playing the London System (with c4) as an Anti-King’s Indian system. Learn More

  26. Scotch Game (10 part series)
Ronen's Opening Survey: Scotch Game (10 part series). C45: Scotch game 4. … Bc5, Scotch game 5. Nxf6. The Scotch game with 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 d4 first came to prominence when one of the leading players of his day, Scottish barrister John Cochrane (who also came up with the Cochrane variation against the Petroff's with 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nf6 3 Nxe5 d6 4 Nxf7!?) suggested it for his London Chess Club team when they took on Edinburgh Chess Club in what went on to become a famous correspondence match in 1824. When London first played it, they got a great position - but Cochrane had to leave for India and they could't convert their advantage, and drew. Edinburgh then opted to play the new idea in the next game and won - so the opening was named in their honor. However the Scotch lay dormant for the best part of a century at elite level until Garry Kasparov sensationally brought it back into fashion when he used it to ruffle up Karpov during their 1990 world title match. Since then, the venerable Scotch has had a new lease of life. And in a new series of Ronen's Opening Survey, our resident theoretical guru, GM Ronen Har-Zvi shows us just how potent a good Scotch can be. Learn More

  36. Alapin Sicilian (9 part series)
New Ideas in…: Alapin Sicilian (9 part series). B22: Sicilian: Alapin's variation (2.c3). For many players not having the time or inclination studying the never-ending labyrinth of mainline Sicilians, such as the Najdorf, Dragon, Taimanov and Sveshnikov, the Alapin with 1. e4 c5 2. c3 has proved to be a very popular alternative. It is named after the Russian master Semyon Alapin (1856-1923), and today it is one of the most solid and respected Anti-Sicilians, championed by many club players and leading grandmasters, such as Evgeny Sveshnikov, Eduardas Rozentalis and Sergey Tiviakov. And now in his latest series of "New Ideas In... " , GM Ronen Har-Zvi takes a closer look at this very popular Anti-Sicilian line. Learn More
  37. Queen's Gambit Declined (6 part series)

The QGD is a very important piece of chess opening theory, and it should be mastered by any chess player who wants to tackle the game seriously.

C42: Petrov: Nimzovich attack ,Petrov: Cozio (Lasker) attack /Kaufmann attack/French attack, Petrov: classical attack ,Petrov: classical attack, Jaenisch variation. The Petroff Defence (sometimes called the Russian Defence, and named after Russia's Alexander Petrov, 1794-1867) is considered as one of Black's most reliable and solid methods of meeting the king's pawn opening. It is easy to play and an excellent choice for someone looking for an alternative to the Scotch Opening, the Italian Game and the 'Spanish torture' of the Ruy Lopez. Until a few years ago, the Petroff was an opening that was favored by only a few top Grandmasters, including Anatoly Karpov and Artur Yusupov. However, the last few years have seen a dramatic rise in its popularity, and it now provides battlefields for many top clashes of the modern elite players, including Anand, Kramnik, Leko, Topalov, and Shirov. And in the latest of his "New Ideas in..." series, GM Ronen Har-Zvi, takes a closer look under the microscope at the solid Petroff. Learn More

An isolated queen's pawn is often called an isolani. Isolated pawns are usually a weakness because they cannot be protected by other pawns. In practice, an isolated pawn is often a concern when it's placed on a open file, thus becoming an easy target for the enemy's pieces. In this series IM John Watson looks at all kinds of isolated pawns, and teaches us how to deal with this particular structural weakness. Learn More

In the latest of his "New Ideas in...." series for ICC Chess.FM, GM Ronen Har-Zvi investigates the latest developments and trends in the ultimate test of the Sicilian Dragon, the Yugoslav Attack with 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 g6 6. Be3 Bg7 7. f3 0-0 8. Qd2 Nc6 9. Bc4. The Sicilian Dragon is back in vogue once again thanks to its recent addition to Magnus Carlsen's ever-growing arsenal. Years ago, Bobby Fischer gave his seal of approval to the Yugoslav attack, stating it was simply a case of preying open the h-file and sac, sac...mate! But this caveman approach in the Yugoslav Attack is well-worked out, as GM Ronen Har-Zvi shows that the Dragon still breathes fire for black with plenty of counter-play. Learn More

New Ideas in…: the Marshall Attack (10 part series). C89: Ruy Lopez: Marshall counter-attack, Ruy Lopez: Marshall counter-attack, 11...c6, Ruy Lopez: Marshall, main line, 12.d2d4. One of the world’s first Grandmasters of chess, America’s Frank J. The Marshall Attack is one of the most important openings in the history of chess and is still deployed with regularity at super Grandmaster level. In current theory the ideas and strategies of both approaches are studied in-depth, and nowadays experts have come to the conclusion that White has no clear superiority in the main theoretical lines.
